Potential Impacts of the SuperTower
Boulder County's Campaign to Avoid High Power Broadcast Facilities

When TV channel 14 was licensed to the City of Boulder, Boulder County wrote a letter to
Channel 14 telling them to put their transmitter on Lookout Mountain. To read the entire Boulder
County letter, click here... Channel 14 finally settled on Mt. Morrison in Jefferson County.

It appears that Boulder County learned from its interference experience with FM station KHIH and the
FCC in 1987. KHIH eventually moved to Lookout Mountain. To read the corresponding article in the Boulder Daily Camera, click here...

The care Boulder County took to avoid high power broadcast facilities may
explain why Ball Aerospace makes spacecraft in Boulder and cans in Golden.

Major Economic Impacts

High technology companies now consider the potential for electronic interference when making decisions
regarding where to locate. Many local governments provide incentives for high technology companies to
locate in their areas. A major source of electromagnetic pollution (interference) is a disincentive for
businesses to locate nearby. Why would a high tech company deliberately locate near a highly polluting
source of electromagnetic radiation?

Due to the lack of interference regulation for business and research equipment and most consumer
equipment, care must be taken by local governments to ensure that high power broadcast facilities are
placed where they will not cause excessive electromagnetic pollution.

Comparison of Key County Economic Statistics

The University of Colorado at Boulder has compiled economic statistics for counties in the State of Colorado. A comparison of these statistics for Jefferson County and Boulder County (click here for comparison statistics) shows that Boulder County has been successful in attracting, protecting and
retaining its high technology business base.

Here are some interesting comparisons:

  • In Boulder County 50.2 % of employees are in the occupation category of Management, Professional and Related, whereas in Jefferson County, this category includes only 41.3% of the workforce.
  • The Top Sector by Employment in Boulder County is Computer and Data Processing Services, whereas in Jefferson County the Top Sector by Employment is Eating and Drinking.
  • The Top Primary Sector in Boulder is Computer and Data Processing Services, whereas in Jefferson County the Top Primary Sector is Malt Beverages (but it appears that no Malt Beverages produced in Jefferson County are consumed in Jefferson County).
  • Boulder County, with a population of 297,688, has 5,877 people employed in Research Development and Testing services, whereas Jefferson County, with a population of 530,966, has only 3,671 people employed in Research Development and testing Services.

IEEE Recognizes the Connection Between Electromagnetic Pollution and Interference

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the most preeminent organization in the electrical engineering field, recognizes the potential for electromagnetic pollution to cause serious interference effects.

Here are some quotes from the August 2006 issue of IEEE Microwave Magazine:

"Electromagnetic noise caused by mobile communications and other sources constitutes an important social problem due to its environmental effects."

"Electromagnetic pollution has been categorized as a new form of pollution, one as detrimental to society as air and water pollution." For corresponding article page, click here...

What is Interference?

In the early years of radio and television broadcasting, with few electronic devices in homes or businesses, RF interference was only an irritation when trying to receive radio and TV broadcasts. With the advent of the “electronic age,” RF interference is now considered to be much more significant. With electronic devices becoming ever more ubiquitous and sensitive, RF interference has become a major concern, not only to consumers, but to businesses.
