History of Lookout Mountain Antenna Tower Land

Where Are We Now

  • January 2005: New County Commissioners Kevin McCasky
and Jim Congrove take office. Dave Auburn
    , who ran against
Commissioner Sheehan in the 2002 primary, is appointed to
replace Sheehan who is forced to resign over an alleged
    unethical “Pinky T” scandal.
  • September 2005: City of Golden offers $1.7 million (more than
appraised value) for 65 acres of land intended for the
    Supertower.
Condemnation proceedings were met with outrage
by LCG who convinced County Commissioners to file against the
    condemnation on June 14, 2006.
  • May 4, 2006: Colorado Court of Appeals reversed the District
    Court and
remanded the Mount Morrison tower case back to the
    Jefferson County Commissioners.
    The rezoning approval is
deficient in three areas: 1) Revisions and additions were made by
the applicant after public testimony is closed; 2) JeffCo resolution
prohibits rezoning for more telecommunications sites if adequate
alternative sites are available; 3) Approval of the Planned
Development does not comply with either the Central Mountains
Community Plan or the JeffCo Telecommunications Land Use Plan.
  • May 16, 2006: Denver City Council withdraws plans for a 200-
    foot tower
for emergency communications in Denver. The Hillcrest
neighborhood protested loud enough to be heard.
  • May 23, 2006: Judge Brooke Jackson again remands the LCG
rezoning case to the BCC for a final decision.
    “The responsibility
of the board now is to review the record and then make a decision
on the proposed rezoning... The court will affirm whatever decision
is made, so long as it can be shown that there is competent
evidence in the record that supports the decision.”
Commissioners McCasky, Congrove, and Auburn are not
    expected to rule before
    until December, 2006.
Golden City Counci Begins Fight

Sunset over Golden
  • June 22, 2006: The FCC votes to review its media ownership rules.
Giant mergers of media companies has caused news credibility gaps
through the U.S. The FCC allows 120 days for public comment.
September 15, 2006: FCC orders a 2004 draft study destroyed.
It found greater concentration of media ownership hurts local TV
    news coverage.
  • June 23, 2006: FCC approves Gannett Corporation acquisition of
    Channel 20
which owns the tall tower on Mount Morrison and most
of the 80 acres LCG is proposing to use for the Supertower on Lookout
Mountain. Gannett also owns KUSA-Channel 9.
  • March-September 2006: Lake Cedar Group pays public relations
professionals to conduct “push polls” manipulating response toward
wanting a Supertower on Lookout Mountain. LCG designs a television
and print advertising campaign against “A small group of people on
Lookout Mountain preventing us from bringing you High Definition
Television.” LCG pays Steve Gray to attend every public meeting of
Golden City Council to speak in favor of the Supertower and against
Golden’s condemnation of park land to preserve the Mountain
    Backdrop.
  • August 2006: IEEE (International Electronics & Electrical
Engineering Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)
    Microwave magazine
    published “Effective Electromagentic Shielding”
to mitigate against “the serious problem of electromagnetic pollution
(which is) as detrimental to society as air and water pollution.”
